Happy New Year 2012

All the best to Captain and Crew ! ! !

I was a Soldier Once...............................

On Saturday night another year will end and a New Year begins. In fact a Leap Year for any females that are interested in Proposing to their significant other.

HMCS Vancouver and our Troops in Afghanistan will celebrate the incoming year while remaining Alert. They will not let their guard down due to the New Year. They will celebrate on leave later in the New Year.

Task Force Vancouver

Task Force Vancouver is the deployment of HMCS Vancouver in the eastern Mediterranean Sea as Canada’s current participation in Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR, the NATO counter-terrorism operation in the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.

NATO launched Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR on 26 October 2001 as a counter-terrorism initiative under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Charter. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the solidarity and resolve of the NATO allies in the fight against terrorism, and to detect, deter and protect against terrorist activity in the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.

As for our Trainers  operating in Afghanistan, they will be as vigilant as ever. The taliban respect no holidays, nor indeed any type of enjoyment.

I find it difficult to understand why the Afghan people are not changing their old ways for more modern ones. The non education of girls is despicable and the early marriages into slavery is archaic at best. This story on CNN turned my stomach. The worst part is if the husband is caught he will never be tried as wives are no more than Chattels in Afghanistan.

This is the headline and the story that caught my eye.

Afghan girl, 15, locked in basement, starved, tortured:

So as New Years approaches I Pray that our Troops are safe and healthy. I pray that they return safely to their loved ones and friends. May the New Year of 2012 AD  bring our Troops safe travels, smooth sailing, blue skies, and a Bountiful New Year.

Happy New Year Robby, enjoyed your blogs through the year of 2011, hope you enjoyed mine????even when I knocked Herr Harper!! The story of the 15 year old Afghan girl is sickening. I'm not sure what can be done by outside help, I think if we look at history the changes must come from within. The women must rise up and effect the changes themselves. I believe they have more power than they might realize if they stand together. Something like the story of Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst and the Women's Suffrage Movement. I guess we will have to wait and see if that happens. It takes people to change people not armies.

I just love that short story "I was a soldier once". It is quite descriptive of what we were made of and what we remember most of those days gone by. I also love that move with Mel Gibson "We were Soldiers", taken from the Viet Nam war. Another memory is the song made popular by Paul Anka in the early 60s entitled "Soldier boy", I used to get sentimental when he sang the part about not getting any letters. Wow, those were the days. Take care, Patrick Buzzell, "Buzz".

In Good Old Borden in 1961 the Toronto radio station CHUM had a contest about the old Connie Francis hit "where the boys are" The radio station asked Where are the Boys. and guess what The winning entry was "Camp Borden" the apprentices. That song still sends shivers down my spine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB2A10Od5TI Have a Good New Year Robby
