Way back in the days of the so called “Cold War” everyone in the Canadian Military endured Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare. We were trained to don a gas mask in 16 seconds or less. To put on a full bio hazard suit in under a minute. We learned how to clear ones gas mask if you happened to be sick in it. This was called the Sploosh method by the troops. Hygiene and Sanitation was extremely important to us cooks. Trying to feed men with limited exposure to Biological or Chemical attacks. The simple act of going to the Lavatory was indeed a two person job. One really had to have faith in ones buddy. The NBCW training was co joined with Aid to the Civil power. Which covered rescue and decontamination in the event that a city or town was hit. Ah it may have been the “Cold War” but it was a time of worry for all even in the schools they were teaching how to duck cover your eyes in the event of a Hydrogen blast. Nowadays we are fearful about WMD this started with the bragging of Saddan Hussein Although none were ever found they did fine chemical weapons stored. This diatribe brings me to today, The Service Battalion in Valcartier was bust training for the unforeseen. As the providers of all Rations and, Fuel and Equipment to the entire military they are expected to operate in Hazardous conditions and in Bio Hazard suits. Well done young soldiers. CFB/ASU Valcartier, Quebec — The decontamination team from 5 Service Battalion of Canada (5 Svc Bn) recently took part in Exercise SOLDAT PROPRE. The purpose of the exercise was to maintain soldiers’ skills in applying proper procedures during chemical or bacteriological attacks. “Essentially, SOLDAT PROPRE focused on maintaining skills acquired when assisting civilian authorities during various operations,” said exercise director Major Hugo Delisle. He mentioned Operation PODIUM, which took place during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as an example.

Now with Christmas fast approaching I would like to share with you the words of the Dutch CDS and two Videos from the UK for Christmas. The Dutch story was sent in by Ed Oursien a fellow Cook and a Veteran of both NATO and UN missions,
Well worth listening to....Information from Europe : Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip. Winston Churchill
Hello Veterans, Family and Friends.
Check this u tube (link below) video. This is a Dutch General who really explains why we have Armies in Canada, US and Western Europe today. And why we can not ever stop for Freedom and peace. Listen and watch! He spoke well! And honoured the Allies that liberated his country in WW 2 (Canada being one of those Allied Counties). Some of you may know this via experience. However it is well done and those that do not know. It brings more light to a subject and understanding.
Here are the Jolly Christmas Videos from the UK.
