Monday Morning RCR's Prepare

Lt Col Alex Ruff CO 2 RCR

As Canadians watch provincial elections. The opposition in parliament are more interested in the use of Challenger a/c and Helicopter use of our beleagured MND, CDS and other ministers.

I wonder if any of the new NDP MPs are even aware that the Second Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment stationed in Gagetown are preparing to once again deploy 450 men and women to the deserts of Afghanistan.

They will be part of our 500 plus trainers, agreed upon with NATO.

I realise that even as trainers we may lose some of them to ieds or insurgents attackiing training facilities. The RCR are one of Canada's highly trained Regiments and I have nothing but praise and confidence in these men and women.

I still feel that the training Role in Afghanistan is dangerous as our trainers never know who is actually in the Afghan uniform, or the Burka walking alongside the camp. Suicide bombers are the weapon of choice. The taliban rarely if ever will take on a Canadian unit  face to face.

So I hope that as these troops enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas with families and loved ones, they enjoy the time at home before switching to in country operations. Being always vigilant.

"Our soldiers will be completely ready to do anything," Lt.-Col. Alex Ruff, the commander of 2RCR, said in an interview.

Please think about our Troops and their families, as once again they go to dangerous parts of our Globe.
