I personally cannot understand Joe Public nor the opposition parties with regard to ministers and the CDS etc using Challenger Aircraft. Canada depends on these ministers and I also include our CDS in this. They are expected to show a pride in Canada no matter where they are on this Globe. Whether giving tax dollars in relief efforts or a Hockey Game on behalf of the Troops.
Canada is far from a third world country, but everytime this cost issue surfaces (and it does with each Governement).
We look like a poverty stricken country refusing to allow our leaders the use of Government Aircraft. The ten thousand odd dollars per hour operating costs for the Challenger is a highly inflated figure.
The costs of Salary being included in the operating costs is ludicrous as the crew from the Captain to the Flight Steward are paid regardless of whether they are in the air or in a car on the highway.
This would reduce operating costs into the 2000 dollar range per hour.
Currently our CDS and other ministers offset the cost with a cheque equivalent to a commercial flight. This is an open Honest way to operate.
Canada has far greater issues to contend with currently, other than the use of a Government aircraft.
Libya is very high on Canada's priorities at the moment and I do feel that we will be better off not being involved in yet another Arab.African Civil War. Where next Yemen, Egypt, Syria or perhaps Bahrain where the Government is squashing citizens who want change.
Shooting and torturing those who wish a democratic Government.
Historicaly Yemen has had Civil wars in the 1960s and again in 1994. Egypt has has had many uprisings, Syria is run by yet another Dictator. Yet we are not taking sides......yet! !
Canada has a Free North Strong and Free, we must insure that we keep it that way. Allow our troops to serve at home for a while.
SO members of the Opposition and members of the public concentrate on the important issues of Canada and of Canadians.

This story is over 60 years late, but then Canada does not show the interest in War Heroes like the UK or the US. William Barker was the Canadian Ace in WW1 with 50 plus confirmed kills. He was both admired and respected by Billy Bishop of WW1 and WW2 fame see the full story of his placque to be placed in the Cemetary where he is interred.
