The piper laments and tears flow in the darkened hours at Kandahar airport. Fellow soldiers from many countries lined the ramp as the Flag Draped casket of Cpl Y Scherrer was placed on the aircraft. This will be his final journey home to his family. ETA is 1400(L) at CFB Trenton where he will be reunited with his family, and together they will travel doen the Highway of Heroes.
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Cpl. Yannick Scherrer's sacrifice was remembered Tuesday during an overnight ramp ceremony at Kandahar Airfield by more than 1,000 of his fellow troops as they bid farewell to the first Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan this year.
As a lone bagpiper played a lament, Scherrer's flag-draped casket was carried by his comrades and hoisted into the side of a Canadian Forces Airbus plane, where it was headed to Canadian Forces Base Trenton in southern Ontario.
Prayers, Tears and a silent tribute will line the bridges and ramps of the highway of Heroes.
My prayers and condolences to the family of this fine young soldier. He has paid the ultimate price for Canada. May he Rest in Peace
