Nine Years and 50 Days & Counting

Afghanistan: Land of the unvanquished

The US has now been in Afghanistan for longer than the Soviet Union. Despite superficial differences, they are very similar conflicts, argues Patrick Cockburn,

US forces have now stayed longer in AFGHANISTAN than the Soviet army during Moscow's ill-fated intervention. The US military late last month exceeded the nine years and 50 days that Soviet troops were stationed in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. The event provoked queries about similarities between the American and Soviet experiences in Afghanistan, but US foreign policy experts irritably slapped down the idea that there could be any comparison between the two.

Sadly the freedoms that have been fought for, over all of these terrible years are not yet forthcoming. Now with the wikileaks fiasco, trust, honour and diplomacy have been damaged beyond repair.

With Canada to remain in a training role. Who is to protect the trainers? We know that US and UK soldiers have been killed by men purporting to be Afghan Police or Army complete with uniforms? This is a terrible war to be involved in.

Our VanDoos and the 12 RBC armored troops are at the heart of this latest mission.

Vitesse Bonne chance et que Dieu dans votre mission, le Canada est fier de vous.

Good Luck and God Speed in your mission, Canada is Proud of you.

Please show your Support and say a prayer for our Troops.

Retired Guy, I agree with everything that you have said in your comment. I am sure if it went to a vote to the people of Canada that an over whelming amount would agree to bring ALL our troops home. When will our government decide to do the right things for our men and women in the forces? We have lost enough good soldiers, and like Robby said , who will be there to protect our trainers? Good luck to the Van Doos on this roto.

What does these words above say to you? This country will never help it's own people. The Goverment in power should be rounded up and and put in jail. They are the worst of all the Afgan people! Our current Goverment had a choice to get are troops out of there, they spoke for the Canadian people. If the public had there say we would be pulling the troops out next year.I do support the troops! But not what they are doing there! To many lives wasted for what. Are the afgan people any better off now then they were 5 years ago.I don't think so.But they WILL take our money.I have to say that the people of Afganistan have to find the courage some where to stand on there own to take back their country!Or we keep giving them billions of dollars and young Canadian lives!Stop the bleeding! Are troops are tired and they want to see there kids grow and be with there wives and girlfriends or boyfriends.Last Sunday I said a prayer for them.I was the first time that I done that.I only hope it come true. Think Red!!
