To begin todays Blog an excerpt from a media release.
“Late last week, with virtually no fanfare, Canada handed over responsibility for Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar to the Americans.
The base has been home to the Canadian-led provincial reconstruction team since 2005 and was — until Friday — run by the Canadian military. It has been the pride and joy of a federal government eager to showcase development and diplomacy amid the rain of Taliban bullets and rockets.
Canadian aid workers, diplomats and soldiers still operate there, but it is now a U.S. installation.”
On the face of this media release it is good news for Canada’s exhausted troops. However in reality a massive Logistical nightmare approaches with the implementation of this operation to bring our Combat troops home. In the media release it says return from 4 years of Combat duty in the south. In reality it has been closer to ten years in Afghanistan overall.
Our NGO’s, our Police Services, our Correctional Officers as well as the provincial reconstruction teams are not consider part of the Combat units. Who will act as their protection while they are carrying out their very diverse and much needed operations. From the mentoring of Afghan Police and Prison Officers, to there building of a much destroyed infrastructure.
Will it be the Afghan Army? ISAF troops from other allies? Much needs to be decided.
