New Hyundai Elantra exposed ahead of LA Auto Show

Love it or lump it, Twitter is nevertheless a superb source of news fodder for an auto writer and a great way for automakers to get the word out about upcoming models. Hyundai chose the popular social media network to tease users who might be interested in the new Elantra, set to debut at this year's Los Angeles auto show later this month.

Hyundai's PR rep puts in a stellar effort to shield the compact four-door from prying eyes, but alas the paparazzi got the shot and you are the benefactor, or at least that's what Hyundai want you to believe in their humourous teaser photo release.

The Elantra will be far from a joke when it arrives on dealer lots, however, as it bears a striking resemblance to the stylish new Sonata, which bodes well for sales. The replacement for the popular compact is also touted as breaking the 40-mpg (5.9 L/100km) barrier, which will put it ahead of much of its competition.

The compact sedan rivalry has grown stronger this year, with automakers making leaps and bounds in styling, quality and features, so the new Elantra won't exactly have it easy. With Chevy's Cruze winning its class in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Car of the Year awards and a new Ford Focus on the way, not to mention the already potent Kia Forte and Mazda3 plus the somewhat dated albeit sales-leading Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla models, competition is fierce to say the least.

The new Elantra will likely be up to the task, so stay tuned for details after the LA auto show launch.
