No doubt Chrysler and its parent Fiat would love the Sebring saga to end, but such will not be the case anytime soon. The sorry story of the current-generation Sebring has tarnished a once respected nameplate, the first and second generation Sebring models being good cars that measured up to most of their contemporary competitors.

The current Sebring's woes are well documented, a model that has fallen short in most criteria when its competitors have upped their game considerably. Just the same, it's more prudent for Chrysler to continue with the Sebring name when the upgraded version debuts later this year as a 2011 model.

According to a report in the Detroit Bureau, Auburn Hills would need to buck up some $100 million to promote a new name, and that clearly isn't in the cards for the upcoming makeover.

Instead, a new name will come when an all-new midsize replacement arrives in two or so years, signifying a clean break from the Sebring model.
