This year there have been several important new vehicles unveiled by manufacturers around the world. However, BMW's announcement of its new 3 Series sedan is arguably the most significant of them all. Since its introduction in 1975, the 3 Series has generally been considered to be the very best car in its class and has achieved tremendous sales success. Now, for 2012, BMW has unveiled the 6th generation model.

The 2012 BMW 3 Series will be available in three distinct trim models: Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line.

The Sport Line includes black front kidney grille slats, black inserts on the front end, as well as black B-pillars and optional black side mirrors. Inside, the Sport Line includes red stitching on the steering wheel and red accenting throughout the interior. There's also a choice of distinct 17- or 18-inch light-alloy wheels available.

The Luxury Line includes chrome front kidney grille slats as well as chrome trim on the front end, with black B-pillars as on the Sport Line. Luxury Line models have their own set of multi-spoke 17- or 18-inch light-alloy wheels. The interior features high-gloss wood trim and chrome accents on the dashboard.

Modern Line models feature satin-finish front kidney grille slats and black B-pillars. Wheel choices include 17- or 18-inch "turbine style" light-alloys. Inside, the Modern Line includes leather upholstery or a combination of cloth and leather. Interior surfaces include both pearl-effect chrome and wood trim.

2012 3 Series models can also be outfitted with a new M Sport package, which includes standard 18-inch light-alloy wheels or optional 19-inch light-alloys, and an M Sport suspension. The package also includes BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline trim, cloth and Alcantara upholstery, an M Shortshifter, M door sills, an M driver's footrest and a new M leather steering wheel.

New 3 Series variants like the 320i, 320d, 318d and BMW 316d have been announced, but Canada will most likely receive the 328i and 335i models first.

The 328i features a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre inline 4-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. The 328i can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds while the average fuel economy rating is 6.4 litres/100 km (EU test cycle) when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, improving to 6.3 litres/100 km when equipped with the optional 8-speed automatic.

The 335i is powered by a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine with 306 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The 335i can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and achieves an average fuel economy rating of 7.9 litres/100 km (EU test cycle) when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, improving to 7.2 litres/100 km when equipped with the optional 8-speed automatic.

The new 3er goes on sale early next year.
